Captain Bob Silah Memorial Golf Tournament Supports Tampa Veterans and Families

TAMPA, FL — Golfers gathered on Friday, March 25 at Bay Palms Golf Complex on MacDill Air Force Base for the Military Officers Association of America’s (MOAA) Captain Bob Silah Memorial Golf Tournament.

The annual golf tournament supports Operation Helping Hand, MOAA Tampa Chapter’s initiative to provide assistance for active-duty U.S. military personnel and their families. The tournament raises funds for military personnel injured in Iraq and Afghanistan who are being cared for at James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital.

The event included a four-person scramble tournament, putting and driving contests, lunch, and awards and prizes after the day’s activities.

“We are grateful for the continued generosity of our benefactors, without whom the event would not be possible,” said Lieutenant Colonel Jim Griffin, U.S. Army, Retired, Chairman of Operation Helping Hand. “It’s especially rewarding to know that these donations will directly impact the lives of our military personnel injured in Iraq and Afghanistan who are being cared for at James A. Haley Veteran’s Hospital and veterans of all wars who utilize the hospital’s Spinal Cord Injury unit for their primary source of rehabilitation.”

The golf tournament honors the late Captain Robert “Bob” J. Silah, U.S. Navy, who founded Operation Helping Hand in 2004. Since its inception, Operation Helping Hand has assisted more than 900 wounded or injured patients and a countless number of family members.

“We are proud to support the life-changing work of Operation Helping Hand and help MOAA Tampa continue their mission for years to come,” said Michael Brown, Executive Director of Unisen Senior Living. “This tournament raises money for a great cause and has helped many military heroes over the years, and we’re honored to be part of that legacy.”

In addition to Unisen Senior Living’s role as top sponsor, Unisen resident and retired Chief Warrant Officer Tom South, U.S. Army, served as director of the golf tournament.
